Shawnee Mission East (Sargon) Robotics

In the past, members of Sargon have taken the time out of their Wednesday meetings to travel to Brookwood Elementary School and mentor their FLC team. Recently, however, the team meets at a parent's house and not at the school, and our mentoring has been less needed.

East's Environmental Club is closely linked with Sargon Robotics. Not only do some of our team members help recycle from time to time, but we also have graciously hosted the Environmental Club's website on our servers. This website was for their Shoe Drive, which successfully collected over 13,000 shoes from the East area.

Qi, our resident web coding monkey, helped out SME by creating a voting system for the student council elections that were based in our website's server. The interface was clean and simple, thus allowing for easy voting and electronic tallying.

Unfortunately, overload caused the server to freeze, but Qi then took the idea to the SMSD website and they agreed to implement his voting solution onto the district internet.

On Wednesday, January 27th, Sargon personally invited a few elementary schools to come in to our meeting and take a look around after school. That night at 5, some kids from and their parents toured around our Tech room as we taught them about FIRST, our team, and the awesome stuff we do around here. A few kids were even interested in starting their own FLL teams!

For one of their weekly meetings, the local Boy Scout troop asked Sargon robotics to give an hour-long presentation about the team and its general goings-on. Qi, Tyler, Chris, and Emma gladly prepared a speech about FIRST and its mission, the 6-week Build Season, and the promotion of science and technology in the community.

Sargon is doing its best to start new FLC teams in Elementary schools around the area. After giving presentations and speeches to many groups of children, a few schools have become interested and Sargon wants to help.
